Founded during the uncertainty of 2020, Orka Interiör is marking five successful years in business this November.
Orka Interiör, established by our Design Director, Kim Crowther and Creative Director Abigail Smith, began when we were given the opportunity to collaborate on a large residential project in Halifax. Having worked together previously in commercial design, we decided to combine our skills and create our own studio – one that would allow us to focus on fulfilling, balanced work close to home.
The name Orka comes from a Scandinavian word meaning to have the energy, strength, or will to do something, a sentiment that reflected our determination and positive approach at a challenging time.
Kim’s background is in commercial interiors, where she managed the Mitchells & Butlers account, travelling across the country to redevelop pubs, bars and restaurants. Abigail’s experience followed a similar path, working with major clients such as Punch Taverns and Star Pubs & Bars. When the pandemic shifted our priorities, we saw a chance to build something new.
“Starting Orka in the middle of such a turbulent year was a leap of faith,” explains Kim. “We wanted to bring together our experience from commercial design and apply it to a more personal, collaborative studio environment. Five years later, we’re proud of what we’ve achieved and the relationships we’ve built along the way.”
Since we founded Orka Interiör, we have completed more than one hundred residential and commercial projects across Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. Our work has included private homes, hospitality venues and offices, with each space reflecting our creative design process and practical attention to detail.
Our project at Lawress Hall, a landmark development in Lincolnshire, earned us a nomination for a Northern Design Award, recognising our growing influence in the region’s design community.
Abigail added, “From our first project to where we are now, we’ve grown in confidence and creativity. We’ve been lucky to work with wonderful clients who trust us to shape their homes and businesses. Looking ahead, we’re keen to expand further into office design and bring another designer into the team as we continue to grow.”
Now entering our fifth year, we continue to combine experience, imagination and a clear sense of purpose, proving that strength, energy and willpower can build something lasting.
